Bedbugs are a nuisance, to say the least. They’ll get all over your mattress and your sheets and they’ll be biting you all night long. Although there are ways to get rid of them (the most effective one being calling the exterminator and buying a new mattress), people wonder if there are alternatives, perhaps a cheaper way to keep the bedbugs away. This question has posed another question – will sleep with the lights on keep the bedbugs away? Sleeping with the lights on will not keep the bedbugs away. This is a ridiculous question and there’s absolutely no way that bedbugs will decide to spare you tonight just because you’ve decided to keep the light on. They’re known to avoid light, but it doesn’t hurt them. There is some truth to the theory that bedbugs will wait for nighttime to come out and take a sip of your blood, but if you’re a person whose work schedule conditions working nights and sleeping days – your bed bugs are going to come out during the day. However, and we can’t stress this enough – bedbug infestations are disgusting (not to mention unhealthy) and you should take care of that as soon as possible. Let’s get started! Do Bedbugs Come Out When the Lights Are on? Yes, bedbugs will come out when the lights are on. The primary goal of a bed bug's life, aside from mating, is to drink blood, your blood – if they’ve infested your bed. There are two reasons that a bedbug might come out of their hiding spot during the day. Firstly, they’ve noticed that you’ve changed patterns (they literally don’t have enough brain to notice it, but they’ll feel hungry and they won’t care about light anymore), so they’ll come at you as soon as they recognize that there’s a human being in the structure. Bed bugs are completely capable of changing their patterns for food. Whenever they’re hungry, they’ll make sure they can eat something. Secondly, bedbugs will be coming out all the time when the infestation is very large. This means that there are simply so many bugs that they have to feed constantly and they can’t be waiting for nighttime, so they’ll take any chance they can get to feast on your blood. What Draws Bedbugs Out of Hiding? So, if you want to take care of the bedbug infestation on your own, you’ll need to draw them out of hiding. Before we get you started on that, we would just like to insist that you call an exterminator, as they’re definitely going to take care of this problem completely and you won’t be having any more bedbugs. If you do it on your own, you may not do the job completely and you could leave some bed bugs behind – this is terrible because the infestation will slowly build up again, and then you’re right back where you were in the beginning. Now, there may not even be a need to draw them out of hiding. Since bedbugs are mostly active at night, you should just stay awake for some time when nighttime comes and observe, you’ll surely find their point of origin. However, if that doesn’t work, there are a few methods to find them. Bedbugs are very attracted to the body heat that their host provides. That’s why pest control experts use low levels of heat not only to draw them out of hiding but also to determine the level of the infestation. Active heat traps are used to coax the bedbugs into the open. You can also use the fact that they’re so attracted to heat to draw them out with a hairdryer. Bed bugs will usually hide in your bed. It can be the mattress, the springs, or any other part of the bed. You should take your sheet off, take the hairdryer, set it on with the most powerful settings, and start heating different parts of the bed. Do it steadily, don’t just move on after a few seconds. You’re bound to stumble upon a hotspot sooner or later. You can actually use this method to kill bedbugs, as well. Hairdryer heat will burn them to death (they won’t actually light on fire, but they’ll cook), just make sure to hold it over them for a while. How Do You Keep Bedbugs from Biting You? A Bed bug infestation is one of the most annoying thing which can happen to you and your family. You will be biten in your sleep and have itching wounds all over your body. Following that, you’re going to need to vacuum everything (especially your bed, after taking the sheet off). Cover your mattress with an encasement and cover your box springs, as well. Make sure to throw away any torn covers as bed bugs can crawl through those tears and make sure to regularly wash your bedding. Put all of your clothes in a black trash bag and leave it out in the sunlight on a hot day – the heat will kill all the bedbugs inside (wash your clothes after).
